Model Predictive Control (MPC) Applied to Resource Optimisation in Heating Network.

Results from our research in collaboration with Stadtwerke Pirmasens (SWPS), CMPG and the University of Cambridge on district heating optimisation have been published.

The paper entitled “Resource-optimised generation dispatch strategy for district heating systems using dynamic hierarchical optimisation” covers the development of a heat generation optimisation framework for district heating providers, based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) methodology. Using detailed sensitivity analysis, key cost drivers and market dynamics have been identified, and high-accuracy time series forecasting models were developed for key inputs.

Optimisation efficiency of the developed methodology was tested using real-world data of the heating network in Pirmasens, Germany. The results indicate significant improvement potentials of over 20% for the reduction in both operational costs and carbon emissions.
